The Fleet Street Forum

Information for new users

The following is a brief outline of how the forum works. Have a quick read to familiarise yourself. You are invited and urged to read this page in conjunction with the forum FAQ which will tell you more about how the forum came to be, its purpose and style.
  • Message boards. The new forum has one message board at the moment which you can access on the web by clicking here. We're planning to introduce a special area for qualifying journalists and media people which will have controlled access similar to the closed sections we had in our Compuserve forum - we'll post details when this is up and running.
  • Offline reading. If you want to read the forum at your leisure without having to stay online then you can do so via email. If you go to the forum then once you have subscribed you'll be able to set options to have every message emailed to you as it appears, have them sent in batches (the digest mode) or just read them on the website when you feel like it.
  • Chat. We don't have a dedicated chat system for the forum but we use and recommend ICQ. This is a free program which pops up when you're online and lets you know if any of your friends are also online. They don't have to be in the forum at the time and you have control over whether people can "see" you. You can chat to anyone who's online at the same time as you as well as send them messages and files. Two people you can start your list off with (and ask any questions about the forum as well) are the sysops - Wendy Grossman's ICQ number is 1555833 and Dominic Young's is 2247831. We'll start a page of members ICQ numbers as soon as everyone starts telling us.
  • File libraries. There are some on Smartgroups which you can contribute to. Interesting files are also posted here on the website. Check the resources page
  • Ownership. The forum has been set up by Wendy Grossman and Dominic Young who were the Chief Sysops of the Compuserve forum. We don't really "own" it, and responsibility for the content of the message boards lies with the contributors. But we are responsible for it getting to this stage. If you have any queries please email us.
  • What's new? Well, everything - and it's going to change a lot. We might put up a What's New page.
